[With examples] The true essence of old digital cameras. Street snaps of light and shadow with the PENTAX Optio I-10

We spend our days surrounded by many cameras, but occasionally we encounter a camera that, regardless of its specs, truly surprises us and captures our hearts.

Today, we're introducing a small digital camera with a somewhat nostalgic appearance: the PENTAX Optio I-10.

This model boasts a retro and charming look, inheriting the design of the famous "PENTAX auto 110," a beloved palm-sized SLR. But this isn't just a camera that's "cute-looking." This time, I took this little companion out for a walk through the city, bathed in the early summer light.

A stroll and a snap, starting with love at first sight

It fits perfectly in your hand and is surprisingly light. The classic white design has a mysterious charm that makes your steps feel lighter just by wearing it around your neck and walking through the city.

When you press the power button, a small lens pops out. The view displayed on the LCD screen isn't as crisp as a modern smartphone; it has a gentle quality. But the moment I pressed the shutter, I realized, "Ah, this camera is truly good at capturing light beautifully."

The everyday dappled sunlight through the trees. The shadow of leaves reflected on a white wall, caught with a sudden glance upwards.

A somewhat rough, yet不思議と warm depiction. The contrast between green and light captured by the CCD sensor in this camera remains with a gentle texture, as if it perfectly embodies "a summer vacation from memory."

It also has a function that gently suppresses camera shake, so when you think, "Oh, that's nice," during a walk, you can comfortably snap away without stopping.

Capturing the familiar city in your favorite colors

Even the familiar cityscape that I walk through every day shows a slightly different side through the lens of this camera.

Walking through Shinjuku, I saw a familiar building towering towards the blue sky. Looking up, there was the vivid green "HANDS" logo.

The back of a person climbing the stairs one step at a time, and the clear blue sky. The blueness of the sky, unique to the CCD sensor, appears with a nostalgic and slightly melancholic atmosphere. This "just right looseness" that isn't overly "sharp and clear" like a smartphone might be why we feel such affection for old digital cameras now.

By the way, this camera also has a clever side, with unique features that continuously focus on moving subjects and automatically trigger the shutter the moment a dog or cat faces forward. Despite its cute appearance, it's actually a very reliable companion.

Gently immerse yourself in a monochrome world

What's surprising about this camera's versatility is its "digital filter" function, which allows you to creatively arrange your photos within the camera. Among them, I particularly wanted you to try the "monochrome" world.

I went around the corner of my favorite building, gently applied the filter, and pressed the shutter.

The moment the colors disappeared, I was struck by this camera's ability to express "light and shadow." The straight shadows cast by the strong sunlight and the silhouettes of plants stretching across the wall. From the dark parts of the shadows to the bright areas touched by light, it resulted in a dramatic and powerful image, like a scene from a movie.

In addition to creating nostalgic black and white or sepia tones, the menu is filled with playful features from that era, such as effects to sparkle with stars or hearts, and a small-face effect to make portraits look slimmer.

A gentle "bokeh" that smartphones can't replicate

Normally, when taking photos with a smartphone, it's natural for "focus to be everywhere" just by tapping the screen. However, when you get a little closer to the subject with the Optio I-10, it reveals a surprising depth, despite being a compact camera.

Placing vibrant green leaves prominently in the foreground bokeh and focusing on the fence stretching into the background. This is a natural out-of-focus created by the lens itself, different from the digital bokeh of a smartphone. The slight bokeh of the city skyline faintly visible in the background also feels nostalgic and endearing.

As I continued my walk, I came across the stairs of a nostalgic pedestrian bridge.

The slightly rusted light blue handrail, the rhythmic pattern created by the stair treads, and the back of an unfamiliar person heading towards the railway crossing. It's strange how just by tilting the camera slightly and capturing it, an ordinary everyday scene can seem to hold a special story.

The adult luxury of "not being too perfect"

The time spent with the PENTAX Optio I-10 was more than just recording; it was a luxurious stroll, picking up the very atmosphere of the city like precious treasures.

It doesn't instantly focus in dark places at night like the latest smartphones, nor does it shoot incredibly clear videos. However,

・A retro and cute design that makes you happy just to hold it

・The slightly melancholic and dramatic way light and shadow are captured, unique to a CCD sensor

・A variety of fun filters to personalize your everyday life

I feel that the true excitement of taking photos lies precisely in this "slightly inconvenient, yet thoroughly enjoyable" aspect.

If you've grown a little tired of smartphone photos, or want to enjoy stylish, film-camera-like photos more casually,

Why not slip this little companion into your bag? Even your familiar route home will surely transform into a new and slightly more endearing scene when viewed through its lens.
