There's a certain "feel" you get from actually carrying a camera around and pressing the shutter, something you can't grasp just by looking at the specs.
This time, I walked through the city with a Canon PowerShot G9 X, one of the many pieces of equipment we handle daily that truly clarifies "the reason to take it out." From these four shots, I'll talk about the perspective this camera gave me.
1. Not "stopping" but "flowing" the city's breath
A night street corner. When I paused, the light of a bus speeding past showed me the camera's "expressive range." Compact cameras often have a strong image of "just point and shoot," but the G9 X is different. I turned the function assigned to the lens ring and slightly lowered the shutter speed. Just doing that transformed an ordinary intersection into a vibrant scene, like the opening of a movie.
2. Urban nuances "spoken" by shadows
The neon sign of a watch shop dyed the night air orange. What surprised me here was the crispness of the silhouette created by the bright F2.0 lens. The highlight text wasn't blurred, nor were the dark areas completely blacked out. This exquisite retention of tonal range is thanks to the "headroom" of the 1-inch sensor. The silhouette of the person standing in the foreground somehow transforms the city's hustle and bustle into something quiet.
3. The pleasure of "capturing" light
Backlit leaves glow as if they are emitting light themselves. Isn't this the most exciting moment when you compose a shot with a camera? The G9 X's Canon-like "warm color reproduction" is perfect for capturing autumn light. The softness of the translucent light and the subtle bokeh in the background. Few cameras of this size can express such "texture."
4. The meaning of "blending in" with the scenery
People walking in the park, ginkgo trees turning golden. When you set up large equipment, a barrier inevitably forms between the "photographer" and the "subject." But with this camera, which fits snugly in my palm, I can blend into the scenery myself and capture natural daily life. A photo closer to "memory" than "record." I believe such a shot is possible precisely because this camera's presence disarms those around it.
What I realized while carrying the G9 X is that this camera creates no stress between the impulse to "want to shoot" and the act of "pressing the shutter."
When I want to fine-tune settings, the lens ring responds, and when I just want to capture the light in front of me, the incredibly beautiful auto mode supports me. So much technology is packed in, yet it's so light that you don't even notice it.
