Today, we'd like to introduce the Olympus SH-21, which has been extremely popular since its release in 2011 for its "perfect size and high performance."
Recently, I took this SH-21 for a walk around Shinjuku. Let's delve into its charm, along with some actual photos taken with it.
1. The agility of a "12.5x zoom" that fits in your pocket
The SH-21's most significant feature is its slim body, approximately 30.6mm thick, equipped with a 12.5x optical zoom ranging from 24mm wide-angle to 300mm telephoto (35mm equivalent).
Take a look at this shot. I was able to capture the towering skyscrapers of Shinjuku dynamically with a 24mm wide-angle. The wide tonal range of the sky is also depicted very clearly with minimal noise, thanks to the 16-megapixel back-illuminated CMOS sensor.
2. Reliable "image stabilization" and high sensitivity even in dark alleys
Street corners at dusk and bustling commercial districts filled with signs are challenging scenes for cameras to expose properly.
The entrance to a night illuminated by dazzling neon and electronic billboards. The SH-21, with its combination of a back-illuminated CMOS sensor and the "TruePic V" image processing engine, suppresses blown-out highlights and retains details even in such high-contrast scenes. The image stabilization works effectively, making it comfortable to snap photos quickly.
3. Rich expressiveness that captures light
Using the zoom, I captured a section of a building wall illuminated by light. The SH-21 dramatically expresses the contrast between "light and shadow." The linear silhouette of the streetlights and the glow of the sunset reflecting in the windows create a lyrical shot that one wouldn't expect from a compact digital camera.
4. Intuitive operability
This camera actually has a "touch panel" on the back LCD. The "touch shutter," which allows you to focus and release the shutter by touching the screen, is very intuitive for us modern users accustomed to smartphones. It's the perfect companion for city walks where you don't want to miss a photo opportunity.
While the "Olympus SH-21" doesn't have the substantial feel of the latest mirrorless cameras, it teaches us the fundamental joy of photography: being able to carry it anywhere and reliably capture the impressive moments you see.
It's packed with features that can't all be covered here, such as Full HD video and super-resolution zoom to capture subjects up to 15m away.
This is a masterpiece that we highly recommend to anyone who wants to "easily take photos a step above what a smartphone can offer."
